D.O.D.O. Power of the Force 2024
Took D.O.D.O. for a ride at Power of the Force Convention in Cologne, Germany, on Star Wars Day 2024. This is day 1, unfortunately no videos of day 2 where she drove significantly better. But I'm happy :-) Stuff that you notice when you know what you're looking for is the head rocking back when starting from a standstill (that was gone on day 2), the slight nodding oscillation when driving straight for longer stretches, and slight vibrations of the head.
Lessons learned: Michael Baddeley's v2 design is really really great! There are some slight weaknesses: You have to disassemble the droid to change the batteries; and the motors are thermally locked in and can run extremely hot to the extreme of destroying them. I burnt out one of the drive motors that way. So before the STL files of the modifications get published, I want to change the battery concept to 18650 packs that can be removed without taking the droid apart, and add ventilation for the motors.
Software, as always, here (WIP): github.com/bjoerngiesler/BBDroids

D-O Basically Done
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 місяці тому
This is D.O.D.O., my D-O replica from Rise of Skywalker, technically basically done. Since the last video I've added the capability to drive the dome with the remote control (using its integrated IMU), added a backplate to the head with movable antennas and an auxiliary microcontroller to drive them, and tuned some parameters a bit. The head is considerably heavier with the backplate and servos...
D-O First almost complete drive
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 місяці тому
Initial drive with D.O.D.O., my D unit Star Wars droid. I'm quite happy with how she drives, although some stuff is still missing. The head movement you see in the video is completely automatic, there is no remote input except forward / backward and turn stick, because I didn't get around to implement the inverse kinematics for that yet... and the automatic movement is much too hot in the turns...

Very first drive of my D-O. No neck or head on, and only very basic controller tuning. I'm happy nonetheless :-D
D-O Selftest Demo
Переглядів 2013 місяці тому
I've implemented a self test routine for (my) D-O (dubbed D.O.D.O. by my everloving wife), first because I'm too damn lazy to do a proper pre-flight check every single time, and second because I think it's good practice for a system that can go completely haywire under PID control if a motor is plugged in wrong. The self test uses D.O.D.O.'s voltage/current sensor to check whether we have power...
Behringer 2600 Gray Meanie vs Black & Orange "Xmas Tree", disassembly and differences on the boards
Переглядів 22 тис.3 роки тому
I've opened up my Behringer 2600 Gray Meanie and Black & Orange "Xmas Tree". Quick recap of the theoretical differences: The B&O has digital reverb, the GM has a spring reverb tank, and there were some rumors that the GM has "selected components" that made it a bit better in whatever respect. Here are my findings: - On the GM, the spring reverb tank is mounted to the back of the main board. - O...
Behringer 2600 Blue Marvin vs Xmas Tree, with a drumloop
Переглядів 2,7 тис.3 роки тому
A couple of folks asked for a bit of different audio material to be run through the Xmas Tree and Marvin 2600s that would be a bit more interesting than my dumb-ass synth bass line earlier. So here's a little drum loop from the OP-Z.
Behringer Blue Marvin vs "Regular" Behringer 2600
Переглядів 17 тис.3 роки тому
Looking at the new Behringer Blue Marvin, spring reverb, sound of the oscillators, and comparing it to the Behringer 2600 Black-and-Orange version with the digital reverb. Quick and rough, don't expect a lot. They are both connected with 5-pin MIDI to make sure USB does not contribute to noise. Sequence is provided by Deluge. Both start out with just a sawtooth from VCO 3. My current impression...
HEVO One-Stepper Triple Z
Переглядів 7375 років тому
Got my HEVO Triple Z working. This is a 500x500x500mm build. The movement is still a bit noisy in the upper 3rd; the 8mm rods I'm using are not *totally* straight and alignment could always be a tad better. Also, there is still binding in the lower ~10cm at higher speeds; again, alignment and the weak-ass stepper I'm using. I definitely see a stronger stepper in my future :-) Still, accuracy is...
X47 Steel, Slimline, Mabook Comparative Review
Переглядів 1,5 тис.5 років тому
I've been using X47 Steel notebooks for some time, and I guess I'm a fan; however they don't offer a way to carry loose sheets or business cards, and don't have a pen loop. So I decided to upgrade, to either the X47 Slimline or the MaBook. Since I couldn't find any proper reviews that would help me decide which one to get, I got both and made a review of my own. Hope you like it!

Noodling on the Neutron

Got my Behringer Neutron today and thought I'd record a couple noodles. Nothing musical; just slowly playing with some controls. Musical stuff to come soon. Arps / sequences played on Bass Station 2.

My Shapeoko routing aluminium for the first time. Router: Makita 701 on 2.5 Bit: Proxxon 3mm and 1mm (for engraving) tungsten carbide milling bits Feed: 150mm/min I'm not absolutely happy with the result but for the first time in alu I guess it's OK...
New PC for my droid
Переглядів 4,9 тис.11 років тому
I wanted to introduce my new high-level controller for my droid. It's an ODROID U2, available from hardkernel.com. I'm in no way affiliated with them, just a fan of this little box :-) Sorry about the sniffing; couldn't help myself once or twice in the video. I have a cold.

R2 with movable Utility Arms and Arm Doors
As you may be able to see, I am somewhat familiar with this technology
Cat: Leave me alone you one-wheeled freak!
That’s incredible! How is it able to move left and right?
Bit of a magic trick 😃 It looks like it's driving on one big wheel, but really it's driving on the two thin rubber rims on the sides of the wheel, each driven by its own motor.
Glad I was recommended this.
Mega geworden
Awesome!
Hello Peter! We are interested in collaborating with you and would like to know the best way to get in touch. Thank you! - Sienna from PCBWay🤗
Who is Peter? 🙂
@therealbjoerngiesler Whoops! It should be my alter ego who handles the cool collabs🤣 Just a little mix-up on our end-apologies for that! Back to business, Hello Björn, might you be interested in exploring a sponsorship opportunity with us? We’d appreciate your consideration!

@@therealbjoerngiesler Thanks a lot!
What is this thing from?
Star Wars - Rise of Skywalker.
@@therealbjoerngiesler huh. I don't really remember that movie it kind of felt like a fever dream.
Lovely bit of control design here! The droid really has some character too. Subscribed so I can follow progress 😊
Thank you! Parametrization is still a bit hot I think, and let's see how well it still controls when the head back plate with the antennas is on, that adds 70g of weight... tuning will continue.
Algorithm bright me here. I like robots.
I could have got any I wanted, I like the Christmas lights, and don’t care about the reverb! I have much better reverbs!
Is it dynamically balanced ? ( Inverted pendulum ) or statically with a weight ?
There's a big counterweight in the body.
I will never understand why that ugly useless droid was jammed into the franchise.
Disney likes ducks, I guess.
This Is Awesome Continue The Great Work
That looks amazing! How long have you been working on it?
Hard to say exactly, since this is a side project of a BB-8 build that's literally going on for years. But this one, probably six months?
Sensational
I would love to build one of these. This is amazing. Where did you get the files and the parts for it?
This is based on the 3d print files of Michael Baddeley (find him on Patreon and Facebook), but modified for encoder motors, Dynamixel servos and completely different electronics and software. Subscribe for howto videos and links coming in the next days.
@@therealbjoerngieslerdone and done
cooool, how does it turn?
That's what I'm wondering
It's a bit of a magic trick :-) It *looks* like there is only one big wheel, but really it runs on the two narrow rims left and right of the wheel, which protrude just a tiny bit, and which each have their separate motor. So turning is the easy part. Making it balance forward/backward without oscillation so that it looks good is the hard part...
@@therealbjoerngieslerThat’s amazing!

Not for sale, sorry 😂 But you can build one...?
Blessed by the algorithm
eeee is amazing!
First droid
Very cool. What is this device's purpose?
Its a ebike hub
It's a (headless, in this video) replica of the D-O droid from Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker. Here's a newer video with head on: ua-cam.com/video/vwj9z-jOJQc/v-deo.html
@@therealbjoerngiesler ok thanks
I own the Original 'Halloween' version of the Behringer 2600 specifically BECAUSE 4 ONE: I could CARE LESS about EITHER reverb -because I have no use 4 EITHER 2600's reverbs as I use EXTERNAL GEAR that is MUCH-3X BETTER; TWO: I happen 2 like the Original 'Halloween' motif (multicolored LEDs incl.) BETTER than EITHER the Blue or Grey versions; and THREE: I can't see what the BIG FUSS is over the SPRING REVERB -I HATE SPRING REVERB! It's NOISY & is indicative of older antiquated reverb that DIGITAL REVERB BLEW-THE-F*CK AWAY 40yrs ago!😒 OH, and FOUR: I saved MYSELF a $100 Bucks that I put towards OTHER Gear!😒
If you can hear capacitor differences, then the design of the circuit is bad. LOL.
does the spring reverb have an audio in patch point? Cheers!
This is a slick presentation. Thanks for the information.
TOOLBOX
Thankyou for taking them apart! Just ordered a grey, nice to know there is a little benefit, and from amsynths' comments below, easier to improve the filter caps further with the through hole design (without having to remove SMD's on the Orange & Black) - anyway thanks for the video :)
Oh, so I went looking for inside pics of the Korg, and while the build a lot higher quality looking generally, and no doubt is... I did see SMD electrolytic caps in the Korg. Which I really don't like, after changing them in so many musical instruments and old computers when they leak badly. Through hole caps like in the Behringer will be easier to service, if the rest of the machine lasts...
6:18 I would not call that a reverb "tank" It's more of a reverb "(jerry)can"
4:44 "Part number..."😂😂😂
1:00 I am willing tto bet that two bl/or 2600's also have just a little difference in output (filter-wise or whatever) given it's analog nature....I have 3 (!) K2's and with them units it is exactly like that...Exact copies of settings give tiny little differences in sound...By ear AND by measurement....NO cap is exactly the same, NO diode is exactly the same , NO......need I go on?!
Very good Blue marving
just mod the black orange urself then u loose nothing...difference is surely not worth 100lb haha. any & i mean anyone that DIY eurorack modules can finish the job in 20 min.
sound?
Very strange that they sound the same. For they say that even two analog synths of the same model sound different.
Hello Björn, nice video. What is the rack you are using to support the ARP2600 and your modular system, that would help me a lot 🙏 ?
I have B&O version and I'd never use the on-board reverb, it's bloody awful, but I never had any intentions to. Even the real spring is not great, but I guess if you like either/both that's cool, but I have far better out-board effects.
I know this vid has been out for a while, but for any who may be curious, I believe that the moog style filter is the one on top of the filter section, whilst the arp 4075 is the one on the lower right. Easier to see when it gets to the grey meanie board, four yellow caps in a row=moog filter. For the record they are quite similar to my ear as well
very good work, this astromech droid are adorable ^ ^
Is that using Lidar?
Thanks for the comparison! Very useful!
I can’t deal with the noise…wish I could get a GM with the digital spring.
OK I'm keepin' the Christmas tree. If I want a spring reverb I can buy one.
Hi like your videos I was thinking about a odyssey but when I hiar this I change my mind what do you think a 2600 or an odyssey 👍
I made myself two different spring reverb tanks to use as external effects. They both work fine.
I was looking to buy the gray version but after i hear the noise in the back ground i pass my turn.
Would the Blue Meanie follow suit with the Grey or B&O? I knows ping on both Blue and Grey, but caps?
I've heard that the blue and gray versions are the same in all but appearance.
You can completely bypass the reverb on both synths yes..?
Nope
Hi Bjorn, thanks for usefull comparison. I've the orange-black and in next future i would like add some modular elements in my setup, like you. Do you play other modules with 2600 and use their outputs (output, midi ecc) or it'n not possible? Sorry for noob question :-) Thanks!
